Work on a seven-month project to build a two-storey ward block at Colchester General Hospital will be completed in time for winter. At 5,600 square meters, the £20m development will be two-thirds the size of the original hospital building to which it will be linked, and is the biggest scheme at the hospital for a decade. Virtually all of the Trust’s children’s services, including their own ward, day unit and outpatient department, will be relocated to the ground floor of the new block which is being specially designed to make it the most child-friendly environment possible. The children’s ward is being built around a large central courtyard that provides a protected play area and sensory garden. The first floor will consist of a ward for patients requiring surgery, an elective care center where patients will be assessed before their operation and discharged afterwards, and a two-bed extension to the adjoining Isolation Ward, bringing it up to a total of 13 beds.
Avonline Flooring was appointed to supply and install all of the flooring for the hospital extension
